The Euphony Euphonium Quartet from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff today won the ‘Small Ensemble Prize’ at the prestigious International Tuba & Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria, performing Christopher’s latest work for the group Islands in the Sky.
The group battled through two rounds against eleven ensembles from all over the world before claiming the prize, using Christopher’s earlier work Equinox to reach the semi-final stage.
His latest work, Islands in the Sky, is in three movements and based on three Alpine scenarios or scenes.
The first movement ‘On Glacier’s Edge’ takes the listener on a thrilling and captivating ride on the edge of an unstable glacier, before a calm and reflective ‘Alpine Sunset’ and finally the ‘Ascent to the Summit’.
Euphony Quartet member Ben Wright said ‘We’d like to thank all the composers whose works we’ve played, particularly Christopher Bond as we played two of his pieces and gave a world premiere to his Islands in the Sky in the final.’
The quartet will premiere the work publically in the UK for the first time on their first day back from Linz; 2nd July 2012 at a foyer event at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
